MY STORY
THE IDEA
The idea to produce a Swedish whisky was born by eight friends in a mountain cabin in 1998. To keep in touch after studying engineering together, the group had a tradition of meeting in Sälen once a year. This time, by pure coincidence, everyone had brought a bottle of whisky. Over dinner, one of them wondered why there was no Swedish malt whisky, and if it was possible to make one – why hadn’t anyone done so already? The question remained unanswered, but soon the vision to pioneer and produce the first Swedish malt whisky took shape. A year later, in 1999, Mackmyra Swedish Whisky was founded.
A VISION TAKES SHAPE
From the beginning, Mackmyra was focused on creating a whisky with a genuinely Swedish character. The journey began with locally grown barley, spring water and svensk ek. Then, thanks to a happy coincidence, Mackmyra developed the 30-liter cask which, in its smaller format, allows the whisky to mature more intensely. Even the smoky recipe has a clear Swedish signature and is malted and smoked by hand with locally cut peat along with juniper rice. A short distance from the distillery, the whisky is stored in a unique location – the old Bodås mine, 50 meters below ground.
WHISKY WITH AN EYE TO THE FUTURE
Today, Mackmyra has new owners and is part of No.1 Beverage Group. Despite the change, the heritage and craftsmanship live on. Mackmyra is still producing whisky with the same curiosity and experimentation as in 1999, but now in the groundbreaking Gravity Distillery, where the power of gravity is used to streamline production and significantly reduce the carbon footprint. Based on historical knowledge of whisky production, Mackmyra uses its own methods to create innovative Products with Swedish raw materials.
THE CREATION
It all began in 1998 with a group of eight whisky-enthusiasts in Sweden who, during a ski trip, made a simple yet daring decision: if no one was crafting whisky in their home country, they would. By 1999 the Mackmyra company was founded, and the first small pilot still was built at Mackmyra Bruk near Valbo.
Through countless experiments with over a hundred recipe variants—different malts, yeasts, peat and oak treatments—they refined two recipes by 2002 and launched their first distillery building.
Mackmyra’s journey is one of blending tradition with innovation. From sourcing Swedish barley and local oak, to using smaller casks for faster, flavourful maturation, and harnessing the crisp rivers of Gästrikland in its water supply, every detail is shaped by place.
In 2011, the “Gravity Distillery” was unveiled—a seven-storey tower designed to let gravity do much of the work, making production more energy-efficient while preserving character.
Today, Mackmyra stands as a pioneer of Swedish whisky: a brand born from curiosity, shaped by experimentation, and grounded in nature. Each release carries the spirit of its creators—bold, local, and always seeking something new.

- Swedish barley — locally grown and harvested, forming the soul of Mackmyra’s single malt.
- Fresh spring water — drawn from clear rivers and natural sources in Gästrikland, ensuring purity and balance.
- Swedish oak casks — smaller casks, often made from native oak, imparting bold flavors and accelerating maturation.
- Selective use of peat — for expressions that carry a smoky edge, using traditional Swedish peat and juniper wood.
- Time & innovation — natural aging combined with Mackmyra’s pioneering methods, such as gravity distillation and unique cask experiments.

Mackmyra challenged tradition not by rejecting it, but by reshaping it through local raw materials, innovative methods, and a profound respect for nature.
From the first small stills at Mackmyra Bruk to the groundbreaking Gravity Distillery, the journey has been driven by a passion for discovery. Swedish barley, pure spring water, and oak from local forests became the building blocks of a whisky that speaks of its origin. Along the way, Mackmyra has inspired a new generation of whisky drinkers, proving that excellence is not bound to Scotland or Ireland alone — it can thrive where creativity meets tradition.
Today, the legacy of Mackmyra lives on in every bottle: a story of innovation rooted in heritage, and a reminder that great whisky is born not only from time, but from vision.
